What Does Connect Wallet Mean? Reading the prompt first
By Elias Varga
Connect Wallet is the first button on all Web3 casinos, and most people click it without thinking. Connect Wallet displays your address, and allows a site to prompt you for things; it does not allow a site to take things. This guide reads the prompts as they appear in a wallet, separates them from the signature and approval requests that may follow, and shows the connect step on 10 web3 casinos’ login pages.
- 10 of 10casinos follow connect with a message signature
- 3prompts to tell apart: connect, sign, approve

What a connection gives a site, in the wallets' own words
What the site gets
MetaMask Help Center: When a site is connecting, it has the ability to see your address, and, since everything on the blockchain is public, the funds you hold. Connecting names the account that the site asks for and, under Permissions, lists the accounts and networks that the site will be able to see. The site may then suggest transactions for those accounts.
What the site does not get
The same article: Connecting does not mean they can access and move your tokens around; a token approval is needed for that. Connecting is a window, not a hand in the wallet. Every interaction with a smart contract and every permission to do that is a separate prompt with its own Approve button.
What comes next at a casino
To sign a message. All ten casinos examined use a signature-based login after connecting. At Just.bet, the login is through Privy’s wallet, based on the same idea as Sign-In with Ethereum (or Solana).
Three prompts that look alike and are not
- 1stconnect: a window on the address
- 2ndsign: a message, no gas
- neveran approval at login
| Prompt | What it says | What it can do | At a casino login |
|---|---|---|---|
| Connect | A site asks to see one or more of your accounts; the wallet shows which and lets you edit the list | Show the site your address and balances; let it send requests | Always the first step |
| Sign a message | A text to approve, naming the site, with a one-time value; no amount, no gas estimate | Prove you hold the address; nothing moves and nothing is paid | Always the second step, at all ten reviewed casinos |
| Approve a transaction or a token | An amount, a token, a gas estimate, and a Confirm button; or a spending cap for a contract | Move coins now, or let a contract move them later | Never part of a login; a deposit comes later and on its own |
The wallets name these prompts differently, but the three shapes are the same in MetaMask, Phantom, Trust Wallet and a WalletConnect session.
Sign-in with Ethereum explained breaks the second prompt into steps and token approvals at crypto casinos explains the third.
What the connect step looks like at the ten casinos
| Casino | The button you press | What the prompt asks | After the signature |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dexsport | Six unlabelled wallet icons under the email field: MetaMask, TronLink, Trust Wallet, Bitget Wallet, Halo, WalletConnect | Connect, then an authorisation message | Nothing; clause 3.1.2 requires a connected wallet |
| BC.Game | MetaMask and WalletConnect in the last row, under Log in directly with | Connect, then a sign-in message | Nothing; an email can be added later |
| BetFury | MetaMask, TON Connect, Trust Wallet, Phantom, TronLink and Coin98, three behind a +3 | Connect, then a sign-in message | Nothing; clause 5.12, one account per wallet |
| Metawin | One button, Web3 Wallet, which opens a WalletConnect picker of 560 wallets with a QR code | Connect through the picker, then a sign-in message | Nothing; clause 4.0, one account per address |
| Roobet | MetaMask, beside Google; no WalletConnect | Connect, then a sign-in message | A name, date of birth and address form before the first deposit |
| Bitcasino.io | MetaMask first in the row; Twitter, Line, Telegram and Apple behind a plus | Connect, then a sign-in message | A register form: username, email, phone, password |
| Solcasino | Eight tiles: Phantom, Solflare, Jupiter, Backpack, MetaMask, Wallet Connect, Google, email | Connect, then a sign-in message; clause 3.1.3 names the wallet as the login | A username is chosen or assigned |
| Rollbit | MetaMask beside Steam and Twitch, under a username, email and password form | Connect, then a message that links the wallet to the account | The help centre tells social sign-ups to set an email and password |
| Fairspin | MetaMask in a row with Apple, Google and Telegram | Connect, then a sign-in message | A phone number and date of birth, by the FAQ |
| Just.bet | Continue with a wallet, fifth in a Privy dialog, opening a list of 603 wallets | Connect, then a Privy sign-in message | Nothing; clause 4 keeps the one-account rule |

Four things to read before you press Connect
- The address bar. The site name in the connect prompt, and in the message that follows, must match the domain you typed. Each review records the casino's domain; a look-alike with one letter changed shows the same prompt.
- Who opened the prompt. You did, by pressing the casino's button. A wallet window that appears the moment a page loads, before any click, is not the casino's login. MetaMask puts it plainly: it will never pop up without you initiating a transaction.
- Which account. The prompt names the account the site will see. Connect the one you keep for play, not the one that holds savings; MetaMask's Edit accounts and Phantom's account picker exist for this.
- Which network. The site sees the networks you allow. It makes no difference to the login, and every difference to the deposit that follows: the cashier names its chain, and a coin sent on another is lost.
What goes wrong, and where
Expected
- A connect prompt, then a short message naming the casino: the normal login, at all ten reviewed casinos
- A deposit prompt later, inside the cashier, with an amount and the cashier's address: the normal next step
- A permissions list in the wallet that shows the casino with one account and one network: the normal state after a session
- A session you can end from the wallet when you are done
Close the tab
- A transaction with a gas fee at the login step: no login needs one
- A token approval at the login step, above all for an unlimited amount: this is how drainer pages take coins after you leave
- A prompt that opened before you clicked anything, or from a page whose domain is not the casino's
- A request to switch to a network you did not pick, or a message shown only as a hash
Nothing in the left column can take a coin; the right column can take a coin, if approved. Crypto casino rug pulls explains how you can lose your funds through means other than the wallet, like the casino.
Disconnecting when you are done
In MetaMask. All Permissions in the menu shows a list of connected sites. Open a site entry, choose Manage Permissions, and then Edit to remove an account or network. A site with no accounts left is disconnected. A similar feature is available in other browser extensions.
On a phone. Ending a WalletConnect session from the app stops the casino from making requests, but it does not log you out of the casino and it does not touch your coin balance which is the casino’s until you withdraw it.
What disconnecting does not do. It does not undo a token approval, which persists on the blockchain until revoked, and it does not close a casino account. Token approvals covers the first and a casino's own settings cover the second.
Connect wallet questions players ask
What does "connect wallet" mean?
It enables a website to see which wallet you control, so it can show account balances and send requests to that wallet. In the words of MetaMask, connecting a site means that site can see your address and the funds associated with it; connecting does not allow a site to control your tokens, and a separate approval would be required to do that. At a casino, connecting is the first step in a two step process to log into a site; the signature is the second.
How can I connect my wallet to a casino?
You press the casino's wallet button and pick your wallet. The extension or app shows a connect prompt, and in MetaMask you can edit which account is connected by reading the Permissions tab and then pressing connect. A sign-in message follows and you approve that as well. If you are using a phone and there is no extension, you select WalletConnect where it is offered, and scan the QR code with your wallet app.
How do I use WalletConnect?
It is a QR code that is used to initiate a session between the site and your wallet app. Five of the 10 casinos reviewed offer it at login. They are Dexsport, BC.Game, Solcasino, Metawin and Just.bet. WalletConnect explains the session.
Which wallets are compatible with WalletConnect?
WalletConnect’s own site has 700+ wallets. Of the wallets listed on this site, Trust Wallet, OKX Wallet, Binance Wallet, Bitget Wallet and Rabby Mobile list WalletConnect support on their respective pages and/or documentation. As for Metawin’s picker, a WalletConnect picker, it lists 560 names.
Is connecting my wallet safe?
Connecting on its own poses no risk. The risk is in what you approve after the connection. A message prompt to sign-in is safe to sign if the site name is what is displayed in the address bar. Transactions and/or token approvals at the login step are the things you should not approve. Phantom adds a tech guard; it only injects into pages served over HTTPS and will never inject into a page served over HTTP or if a page is served over an iframe.
Can a site steal from a connected wallet?
The connection can't steal it. The wallet does show requests; theft requires you to approve a transaction. The page that opens your wallet and prompts for approval before you click anything, or requires approval when you log in, is a page to close. MetaMask itself says it'll never pop up without you initiating a transaction.
Does connecting cost gas?
No. Neither the connection or sign-in message that follows is a transaction, therefore no network fees are paid. Gas appears when a coin moves; a deposit after a login, approval, or swap in a cashier. Gas fees at crypto casinos lists what each chain charges.
How do I disconnect a casino from my wallet?
All Permissions in MetaMask's menu shows the connected websites; Manage permissions and Edit let you remove accounts or networks from a site, and a site with no accounts is disconnected. Phone wallets show WalletConnect sessions in their connections, and let you end each session. The casino account stays open until you close it with the casino.
